What is WCAG contrast?
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define minimum contrast ratios between text and its background. The goal is to make text legible for the largest possible audience, including people with low vision, color blindness, or those reading in poor lighting.
AA is the standard legal requirement in most jurisdictions (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text). AAA is the enhanced target (7:1 for normal text, 4.5:1 for large text). Aim for AA at minimum, AAA where possible.
