Built for creators who care about color.

Most palette tools are cluttered with ads, sign-up walls, and watermarks. ColorMix is the opposite — it loads instantly, runs entirely in your browser, and gets out of your way.

Whether you're designing a website, painting a webtoon, or styling a brand, the right color combination is the difference between forgettable and unforgettable. We built these tools to help you find those combinations faster.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about the tools, your privacy, and how the algorithms work.

What is ColorMix?+

ColorMix is a free, in-browser color tool suite for designers, illustrators, and creators. It has three tools: From Image (extract a 5-color palette from any photo), Generator (roll fresh palettes with lockable colors), and Contrast Checker (test any two colors for WCAG AA/AAA compliance).

Is my image uploaded to a server?+

No. Everything runs in your browser using the HTML5 canvas and FileReader APIs. Your image, screenshot, or artwork never leaves your device. We literally cannot see it — there is no upload step.

What algorithm does the From Image tool use?+

Median-cut color quantization. We recursively split the RGB color space along the longest channel until we have N buckets, then average each bucket. It runs in under 50ms on a 200px image and is fully deterministic — the same input always gives the same output. The algorithm was first described by Heckbert (1982).

What's the difference between From Image and the Generator?+

From Image extracts colors from a photo you upload. The Generator creates a random palette from scratch and lets you lock individual colors while rerolling the rest. Use From Image when you have visual inspiration; use the Generator when you want to explore.

What is WCAG AA / AAA?+

WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) is the international standard for accessible web content. AA requires a 4.5:1 contrast ratio for normal text and 3:1 for large text. AAA requires 7:1 and 4.5:1 respectively. Our Contrast Checker shows compliance for any two colors you give it, with live previews of normal and large text.

Can I use the extracted palettes commercially?+

Yes. Hex codes are just numbers — no copyright applies. Use them in any project, personal or commercial, with no attribution required.
